Saturday hoops roundup: CIA boys win Birchwood Bash

The Cook Inlet Academy boys basketball team won the Birchwood Bash on Saturday in Chugiak by defeating Birchwood Christian 77-46.

The Eagles improved to 6-2, with Ian McGarry and Alek McGarry both turning in all-tournament performances.

Ian McGarry had 37 points, with Alek McGarry scoring 13 in the first quarter before leaving the game with an injury. Also, Brandt Rollman had 10, Brady Baeten and Lucas Oyoumick had 5, Silas Barnes had 3, and Zach Armstrong and John Guerra had 2.

AJ Severns led the Warriors with 18 points.

The Cook Inlet girls finished 2-2 at the tournament after defeating Birchwood Christian 30-26 on Saturday. The Eagles are 5-2 overall.

Ella Rollman powered the victory, finishing with 20 points. Also, Beka Dillingham had 6, Clara Warren had 3 and Maria Smith had 1.

Barrow boys 74, Ninilchik 59

The Wolverines went down in the battle for seventh place Saturday at the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School in Anchorage.

After losing to Class 4A teams on the first two days of the tourney, the Class 2A Wolverines went down to the Class 3A Whalers on Saturday to fall to 4-4 overall.

Ninilchik trailed 33-22 at the half, but stormed back in the third quarter and actually took the lead early in the fourth quarter before Barrow took control again.

Maxx Russell got player of the game for Ninilchik with 11, while Kade McCorison poured in 31. Also, Andon McCorison and Holdon Cameron had 6, Eric Radar had 3 and Onyx Allen had 2.

Juneau girls 63, Soldotna 26

The Stars are 7-4 overall after the loss to the Crimson Bears.

Soldotna head coach Rustin Hitchcock wrote that his team improved throughout the three-game trip to Southeast, but also identified areas for improvement in practice. The coach said the Stars have had 11 games and 16 practices so far this season.

For the Stars, Hope Hillyer had 11 while Alyssa McDonald had 5, Teagen Kobylarz and Anaulie Sedivy had 4, and Grayson Henry had 2.

For Juneau, Gwen Nizich and Cailynn Baxter had 13, Cambry Lockhart had 10, Layla Tokuoka had 9, Athena Warr had 6, Kerra Baxter had 5, Addison Wilson, Bergen Erickson and Sadie Lockhart had 2, and Lydia Goine had 1.

Palmer Elks Tournament

The Homer boys won Saturday at the Palmer Elks Tournament, while the SoHi boys and Homer girls lost.

The Homer boys toppled Soldotna 57-54, with Homer improving to 1-5 overall and 1-2 at the tournament, and SoHi falling to 0-3 at the tourney and 6-5 overall.

The Mariners grabbed a 22-10 lead after the first quarter, and held on to lead 35-28 at the half. SoHi had it tied at 44 entering the fourth quarter.

For the Mariners, Einar Pederson poured in 20, while Spencer Dye had 15, Weston Marley had 10, Henry Wedvick had 8 and Preston Stanislaw had 4.

For the Stars, Easton Hawkins had 13, Izaiah Gilbert and Jayden Stuyvesant had 10, Damari Adams had 8, Josh Babcock had 5, Owen Buckbee and Theo Huff had 3, and Sam Strouse had 2.

The Homer girls fell to 1-5 overall and 1-2 at the tournament by falling to Service 76-21.

For Homer, Channing Lowney had 7, Abby Ostrom had 5, Keagan Niebuhr had 4, Mally Im and Kieryn Huffman each had 2, and Emily Stafford had 1.

For the Cougars, Aryanna Matson had 29, Nevaeh James had 17, Leia Silva had 13, Karlierose Lealaisalanoa had 9, and Leilah Bailey and Rhianna Kochutin each had 4.
