The Peninsula Oilers split an Alaska Baseball League doubleheader at the Chugiak Chinooks on Sunday, winning the first game 5-2 before losing the second game 7-3.

The Oilers fell three games behind the league-leading Mat-Su Miners, who beat the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 7-4 on Sunday. The Oilers are in second place, one-half game ahead of the Pilots.

The Oilers have four games left in the regular season — a 7 p.m. game at the Anchorage Bucs on Monday, a 5 p.m. doubleheader at the Bucs on Tuesday and a 6 p.m. contest at the Miners on Wednesday.

The Oilers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after six innings in winning Game 1.

Cody Wood got the win on the mound, going five scoreless innings and giving up just four hits.

At the plate, Jonathan Washam and Seth DeWitt were both 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

In the second game, the Oilers battled back from a 3-2 deficit in the seventh only to have their hopes crushed by a walk-off grand slam.

Daniel Szpik had the big hit for the Oilers in the seventh inning, doubling with two outs to score Marshall Boggs from first.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Austin Piscotty yielded a one-out double to Will Bass. A Piscotty offering then hit the plate and got away, allowing Bass to get to third and forcing the Oilers to walk the bases loaded.

Andrew Bash came on to face Ethan Wiskur. All Wiskur needed was a sacrifice fly, but he provided much more than that by clearing the fence.

Ryan Smith got the start for the Oilers, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings.
