Nikiski volleyball beats Kenai in title game of North/South Tourney

The Nikiski volleyball team defeated Kenai Central 2-1 in the Gold Bracket championship game of the North/South Todd Brewer Tournament on Friday and Saturday in Seward.

In the Silver Bracket final, Houston defeated Nome.

Making the all-tournament team from the Kenai Peninsula were Rebecca Trowbridge of Homer, Kate Wisnewski of Kenai Central, Ashlynne Playle of Nikiski and Mikinley Williams of Seward.

The tournament started with round-robin play between the 10 teams, with each team playing two games to 21 against every other team.

After that, the top five teams were put in the Gold Bracket, while the bottom five were in the Silver Bracket.

Another round robin ensued in each bracket, with each team playing every other team in one game to 30.

The top two finishers in each bracket then played for the title.

In the first round robin, Kenai was first at 17-1, Seward was second at 14-4, Nikiski was third at 13-5, Barrow was fourth at 11-7, Mountain City Christian Academy was fifth at 11-7, Homer was sixth at 9-9, Nome was seventh at 7-11, Bethel was eighth at 4-14, Houston was ninth at 2-16 and Delta was 10th at 2-16.

In that round, Kenai beat Nikiski 21-9, 21-13, beat Bethel 21-13, 17-13, beat Seward 21-10, 21-10, beat Houston 21-12, 21-15, beat Barrow 21-6, 21-17, split with Homer with a 21-18 loss and 16-12 win, beat MCCA 21-11, 21-10, beat Delta 21-18, 18-15, and beat Nome 21-8, 21-13.

Seward beat MCCA 21-10, 20-10, beat Barrow 21-9, 21-16, lost to Kenai, beat Nome 21-19, 21-14, beat Bethel 21-19, 21-8, beat Delta 21-11, 24-22, split with Homer with a 21-15 loss and 23-21 win, split with Nikiski with a 21-10 loss and 21-17 win, and beat Houston 21-15, 21-13.

Nikiski lost to Kenai, beat Homer 21-14, 21-15, beat MCCA 21-19, 21-8, beat Bethel 21-13, 21-12, split with Barrow winning 21-14 and losing 14-21, beat Houston 21-9, 21-13, split with Nome winning 21-13 and lost 22-20, split with Seward, and beat Nikiski 21-8, 21-11.

Homer lost to Nikiski, beat Houston 21-14, 21-10, split with Nome losing 21-15 and winning 21-19, split with Kenai, beat Bethel 21-13, 21-17, split with Seward, split with Barrow winning 21-20 and losing 21-17, split with Delta losing 21-19 and winning 21-10, and lost to MCCA 21-16 and 20-18.

In Gold Bracket pool play, Kenai beat MCCA 30-22, beat Seward 30-27, lost to Nikiski 21-10 and beat Barrow 30-18.

Seward lost to Kenai, beat Barrow 30-27, beat MCCA 30-26 and lost to Nikiski 30-17.

Nikiski beat Barrow 20-18, beat MCCA 30-12, beat Kenai and beat Seward.

In the Silver Bracket, Homer beat Bethel 30-28, lost to Houston 33-31, beat Delta 30-19 and lost to Nome 30-18.
