Kodiak, Palmer baseball reach Southcentral final

The Palmer and Kodiak baseball teams each won twice Thursday at Soldotna Little League fields to earn Division II state berths and advance to the championship of the Southcentral Conference baseball tournament.

Palmer topped Redington 10-0 in the first round, then toppled Kenai 16-4 in the semifinal. Kenai had defeated Soldotna 6-5 in the first round.

Kodiak defeated Redington 18-3 in the first round and Grace 7-6 in the semifinal. Grace had defeated Homer 5-1 in the first round.

Palmer and Kodiak meet at 7 p.m. today for the title. The loser plays in Saturday’s second-third place game at 1 p.m. With the top three earning state bids, the championship loser already has state locked up.

The big question now is who gets the third berth.

Houston plays SoHi and Redington plays Homer at 10 a.m. today to stay alive. The Houston-SoHi winner then plays Grace at 3 p.m., and the Redington-Homer winner plays Kenai at 3 p.m. The winner of those games plays Saturday at 10 a.m. to reach the second-third game and get that state berth.

Palmer 16, Kenai 4

The Moose moved into the championship game by overcoming an early deficit against the Kardinals to invoke the mercy rule.

Kenai took a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, but Palmer tied the game in the bottom of the inning, then went up 10-2 after the second, 12-3 after the third and 16-3 after the fourth.
