Kenai volleyball finishes 2nd at Lady Grizzly Invite

The Kenai Central volleyball team led the Kenai Peninsula at the Lady Grizzly Volleyball Invitational by finishing second in the platinum bracket.

Also in the platinum bracket, Soldotna was third, and Seward and Homer tied for fifth. In the sliver bracket, Nikiski tied for second.

In the platinum bracket, Kenai beat Homer 25-18, 19-25, 3-0, before losing to Palmer 25-19, 25-20. The Kards then topped Seward 25-11, 25-22. In a rematch of the Class 3A title game from last season, Kenai beat Valdez 25-17, 26-24, then beat Soldotna 25-20, 25-12 to reach the title game against Palmer. Kenai won the first match 25-10, 25-22, but then lost the if-necessary match 30-23.

Soldotna defeated Seward 25-20, 25-20, and then Valdez 26-24, 26-15, before losing to Palmer 25-14, 25-13, and losing to Kenai.

Seward lost to Soldotna and then Kenai. Homer lost to Kenai and then Valdez.

In the silver bracket, Nikiski beat Grace Christian 25-22, 25-17, lost to Monroe Catholic 27-25, 25-17, beat Mt. Edgecumbe 25-20, 21-20, beat Grace 25-19, 25-21, beat Su-Valley 25-19, 25-14 and lost to Monroe Catholic 20-25, 25-18, 15-9.

In pool play, Kenai was second in Pool A with a 7-1 record. Kenai beat Sitka 25-16, lost to Valdez 25-13, beat Barrow 26-25, beat Soldotna 25-20, beat Nikiski 25-4, beat Anchorage Christian 25-9, beat Bartlett 25-9 and beat Su-Valley 25-15.

Soldotna was second in Pool A at 6-2. The Stars beat Bartlett 25-16, beat Sitka 25-21, beat ACS 25-20, lost to Kenai, beat Barrow 25-14, beat Su-Valley 25-13, beat Nikiski 25-18 and lost to Valdez 25-20.

Nikiski was eighth in Pool A at 1-7. The Bulldogs beat Su-Valley 25-17, lost to Barrow 26-24, lost to Valdez 25-15, lost to ACS 25-22, lost to Kenai, lost to Sitka 25-21, lost to Soldotna and lost to Bartlett 25-20.

Seward was second in Pool B at 6-2. The Seahawks beat Mt. Edgecumbe 26-24, beat Colony 25-20, beat Wasilla 25-17, lost to Houston 25-22, beat Homer 25-23, beat Grace 25-12, lost to Palmer 25-11, and beat Monroe 25-22.

Homer was third in Pool B at 6-2. The Mariners beat Grace 25-17, beat Monroe 25-20, beat Wasilla 25-19, lost to Seward, beat Mt. Edgecumbe 25-13, lost to Palmer 25-23, beat Colony 25-17 and beat Houston 25-7.

For Kenai, Emma Beck and Jorgi Phillips made all-tournament. For SoHi, Katelyn Morrison was all-tournament and also the most valuable offensive player. For Nikiski, Savanna Stock and Ashlynne Playle made all-tournament. For Homer, Izzy Dye made all-tournament, while Jordan Hartman got the nod for Seward.

Sports briefs: Soldotna hockey, wrestling teams secure wins at weekend tournaments

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
