Kenai, Homer volleyball notch wins

The host Kenai Central volleyball team moved to 2-0 in nontournament play with a nonconference sweep of Bethel on Thursday.

The Kardinals notched 25-21, 25-11 and 25-14 victories.

Kenai coach Tracie Beck said the gym was not quite as hopping as during a victory over Sitka on Wednesday, but there was still plenty of excitement.

“The crowd again was very loud, and the girls played solid through it,” Beck said.

Erin Koziczkowski gave the Kards a big presence at middle hitter, getting seven kills and two stuff blocks. Emma Beck had eight kills, while Brooke Ashley and Andie Galloway each had four kills.

Galloway also had seven aces.

“She just has this great jump float that’s hard to pass,” Beck said. “She was finding the seams between some girls and taking advantage of miscommunication.”

Jorgi Phillips had 19 assists. Beck was happy with the way Phillips moved the ball around and got a variety of players in on the attack.

Valerie Villegas had eight digs, while Phillips and Villegas each added four aces.

“We have plenty of places to grow,” Beck said. “We need to continue to improve, but the things we did well, we did well with great consistency.”

Homer 3, Sitka 1

The host Mariners notched a nonconference victory over the Wolves on Thursday night, winning 25-20, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-14. Homer is now 1-0 in nontournament play.

Grace Gummer had a monster match, collecting 20 kills and five aces. Brooke Shafer had 22 assists, Zoe Adkins had 14 digs, and Izzy Dye had four aces and five kills.
