The visiting Kenai Central football team defeated Kodiak 39-6 in Mid Alaska Conference action Friday.
The Kardinals moved to 2-0 in the league and 3-2 overall, while the Bears fell to 0-2 and 0-4.
“It was a really great game for our whole team,” Kenai head coach Jake Brand wrote in a text message. “Defense came out and made a stop on fourth down to set the tone.”
The Kardinals led 17-0 after the first quarter and 33-6 at halftime. The Kards tacked on another score in the fourth quarter.
Brand wrote the offense moved the ball all day, with Gunnar Stanley and Kainoa Taylor rolling up multiple scores on the ground. Brand added that Kyron Gonzalez, Eli Smith and Sullivan Odis were effective targets in the passing game for Garrett McCanna. Gonzalez caught a ball for a two-point conversion.
Brand also wrote that Jamel Barnes was special on defense, with multiple sacks and stops on outside runs. Brand said the defense scored on a safety and a blocked punt.
The Kardinals have their home opener at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, against Mid Alaska foe Redington. Kenai lost to Redington 50-14 in Week 2 in nonconference play.
“It’s gonna be really tough,” Brand wrote. “We are certainly a different team than when we faced them.
“With the Kodiak cancelation that was our first varsity game. Still. They are a good team. But Homer found a way. Hopefully we find ours too.”
