Kenai Central’s Mese wins national title; Ostrander 2nd at Carlsbad 5,000

Kenai Central sophomore Logan Mese helped the Valley Thunder win the USA Hockey Tier II 16U 2A national championship Monday in Amherst, New York.

Mese was the lone skater from the Kenai Peninsula on the team, which is based in Wasilla.

According to the Alaska Sports Report, the Valley Thunder is the 12th Alaska youth team to win a national championship.

The Thunder went 6-0-0 in the tournament, including defeating the Jr. Sun Devils of Arizona 2-1 in the championship.

Mese had three goals and three assists in the tournament. On the Thunder website, he’s listed with 40 goals and 45 assists in 45 games this season.

Ostrander takes 2nd in Carlsbad 5,000

Allie Ostrander, a 2015 graduate of Kenai Central, finished second in the Carlsbad 5,000 on Sunday in California.

The race bills itself as the “World’s Fastest 5K.” It happens on a flat course close to the Pacific Ocean.

The victory went to Laura Galvan of Mexico in 15 minutes, 5 seconds, which is 4:51 per mile. Ostrander was next at 15:47, which is 5:05 per mile.
