Kenai Central swimmers, divers sweep Kenai Invitational

The Kenai Central swimming and diving teams swept the Kenai Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

On the girls side, the Kardinals scored 119 points to beat the 83 of runner-up Palmer. Soldotna was third with 40, while Homer was fifth with 32.

For the boys, the Kards scored 116 while Palmer had 81, SoHi had 76 and Homer had 16.

The Kardinals honored seniors Abigail Price, Ra’ah Roady, Logan Cartwright and Abigail Bishop at the meet.

Cartwright is a first-year swimmer, while Bishop is in her second year, and Price and Roady have been with the team for four years.

Price won the 100-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 6.18 seconds.

She also teamed with Emma Castimore, Isla Crouse and Molli Sansotta to win the 200 medley relay in 2:01.26, and teamed with Sansotta, Isla Crouse and Kailey Crouse to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:06.84.

“She was sick, sick, sick, but she’s just a trooper,” Kenai head coach Will Hubler said of Price. “She went for it.

“I mean, you saw her with a bucket on the side.”

Hubler said a number of swimmers were sick, but fought through it.

“I was really proud of them, because I’m not letting up in practice at all,” he said. “I kind of break them down so I can taper them for regions.”

Hubler really liked the 500 free of Castimore. She won at 5:52.07.

He said Lucy Anderson taking third and Emma Karron taking fourth in diving also helped.

The Kenai girls also received a victory from Isla Crouse in the 200 individual medley at 2:26.20.

For the boys, Lyman McBride, Fletcher Darr, Bennett Martin and Jacob Merritt won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.68.

Martin, Zairhen Traxler, Katzenberger and McBride took the 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.05.

McBride also won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.23 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.32.

Katzenberger won the 200 IM in 2:18.45, while Darr won the 500 freestyle in 5:50.16.

The Stars were led by individual victories from Michael Davidson in the 200 freestyle at 1:58.57 and in the 100 backstroke at 58.18.

Soldotna head coach Stephanie Snyder said Owen Walker was swimming with a slight injury, but still dropped time in finishing second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke.

On the girls side, Snyder said Dorothy Brown and Judyth Hollingsworth both took off more than 10 seconds in the 500 freestyle.

Snyder said she has 23 swimmers on the team. Though the Stars had some injuries, she said the team did a good job of translating practice into competition.

“We’ve got a lot of new swimmers, but they’re very consistent and working hard,” she said. “They’re coming to practice with good attitudes and just having a lot of fun.”

Jeremiah Overdorf led Homer by winning the 100 freestyle in 55.32. Homer head coach Kane Graham said Overdorf dropped 2.5 seconds in the process.

Overdorf also was fourth in a competitive and close 50 freestyle race.

“I love to see those fights when those finals heats get tight and it’s a good race for everybody,” Graham said.

On the girls side, Graham said it was nice to see senior Marina Co back in the pool. Co got a late start to the season, but was second in the 100 butterfly and third in the 100 breaststroke.

Graham said other highlights were Avery Briscoe placing in the 100 butterfly and Lorelei Kinney swimming the 200 IM for the first time and getting third.

“Overall, I saw a good effort from Homer,” Graham said. “I’m happy with it.”
