The Juneau-Douglas girls and Redington boys both clinched titles Saturday at the Craig Jung Kenai River Challenge at Kenai Central High School.
Both the Crimson Bears girls and Huskies boys finished 3-0. Also for the girls, Kenai was 2-1, Redington was 1-2 and Seward was 0-3. For the boys, Seward, Kenai and Nikiski all finished 1-2.
The Juneau girls clinched the title in convincing fashion with a 50-23 victory over Redington. Skylar Tuckwood led a balanced Crimson Bears attack with 13 points, while Trinity Jackson added 12. For Redington, Lexi Seymore led the way with 12 points.
The Redington boys clinched their title with a 45-40 victory over Nikiski. Doyle Bond had 16 points for Redington, while Logan Seymore had nine points, Cort Sandefur had eight points, Trevor Bowman had seven points and Bryce Murdock had five points.
For Nikiski, Brady Bostic had 10 points while Charlie Chamberlain had nine, Braeden Porter had seven, Isaiah Daniels had six, Dillon Hanson had five, Levi Anderson had two and Seth Payne had one.
The Kenai girls finished their tournament with a 32-25 victory over Seward. Emma Beck paced the Kardinals with 10 points, while Logan Satathite had nine, Riley Sparks had four, Erin Koziczkowski, Emilee Wilson and Denali Bernard had two points apiece, and Amber Nash had one point.
For Seward, Shelby Sieminski had 14 points while Hailey Ingalls and Hannah Schilling each had four, and Lena Jagielski had three.
The Seward boys notched a 32-30 over Kenai. For the Seahawks, Tommy Cronin had nine points, while Kupono Albino had eight, while Bergen Davis had seven, Ozzy Deel had six and Nick Ambrosiani had two.
For the Kenai boys, Wade James had nine while Joseph Hamilton had six, Ky Calvert and Luke Armstrong each had four, Griffin Gray had three, and Eli McCubbins and Bridger Beck each had two.
In the tournament skills competition, Redington’s Wayde Bowman and Juneau’s Trinity Douglas were the 3-point competition winners, while Redington’s Lexi Seymore and Kenai’s Samuel Baisden were the free-throw competition winners.
The MVP of the girls tournament was Kenai’s Emma Beck, while the all-tourney team had Redington’s Destiny Simmons, Kenai’s Logan Satathite, Juneau’s Skyler Tuckwood, Seward’s Shelby Sieminski, Juneau’s Trinity Jackson and Redington’s Lexi Seymore.
The MVP of the boys tournament was Seward’s Tommy Cronin, while the all-tourney team had Kenai’s Bridger Beck, Kenai’s Wade James, Redingston’s Wade Bowman, Nikiski’s Brady Bostic and Redington’s Logan Seymore.
CIA Classic
The Soldotna girls and boys junior varsity basketball teams both wrapped up titles Saturday at the Cook Inlet Classic with perfect records.
The Eagles boys were second with a 2-1 record, while the Eagles girls were also second with a 2-1 record. Both Ninilchik squads were 1-2, while Kenai’s JV teams were 0-3.
The Soldotna JV girls defeated Kenai JV 57-14 to wrap up the title.
For the Stars, Morgan Lemm had 11 points, while Mercedes Leadens, Kaitlyn McAnelly, Alex Lee and Zayra Poage each had eight. Also for the Stars, Annie Burns had six, while Brooke Walters and Katelyn Morrison each had four.
For Kenai JV, Avia Miller had five points, while Sierra Hershberger had four, Mycka Phillips and Madison Malone had two and Grace Kahn had one.
The Soldotna JV boys defeated Kenai JV 55-40 for their championship.
Derrick Jones and Andrew Pieh each had 14 for the Stars, while Will Inman had 13 and Zac Buckbee had 11. Also for SoHi, Blake Inger had two and Parker Rose had one.
For Kenai, Caleb Litke had 10 while Luke Armstrong and Zac Armstrong each had seven, Armands Leksejs had six, Ky Calvert and David Martin each had four and Carnell Gump had two.
The Cook Inlet Academy girls notched a 33-31 victory over Ninilchik.
Tatum Rozak had 19 points for the Eagles, while Hope Hillyer added 14. Danielle Smith had a 3-pointer.
For Ninilchik, Autumn Calabrese had 11 points, while Zoia Fefelov had 10, Rebecca Okonek and Rian Ofstad each had four and Riley Tucker had two.
The CIA boys defeated Ninilchik 44-39.
For the Eagles, James Boyd had 14 points, while Ethan Boyd had 12. Also for CIA, Jeremiah Dillingham and Abraham Henderson had six, and Ian McGarry and Brady Baeten had three.
For the Wolverines, Cole Moore had 13 points, while Blake Lemons had 10. Also for Ninilchik, Cody Blossom had six, Rowan Mahoney had four, and Kade McCorison and Wyatt McCloskey each had three.
The team sportsmanship awards at the tournament went to the CIA and Ninilchik girls, and the CIA boys. The free-throw winners were James Boyd of CIA and Rebecca Okonek of Ninilchik, while the 3-point winners were Ethan Boyd of CIA and Autumn Calabrese of Ninilchik.
Grace Christian Grizzly Classic
The Homer boys finished 1-2 at the tournament after a 64-41 loss to Grace on Saturday. Peyton Edens and Carter Tennison made the all-tournament team for the Mariners.
The Homer girls finished 2-1 and in second place at the tournament after a 44-29 loss to Grace on Saturday. Kaylin Anderson and Sydney Shelby made all-tournament for the Mariners.
