Hoops roundup: Seward notches sweep in Nikiski

The visiting Seward girls basketball team defeated Nikiski 36-24 on Friday in Peninsula Conference play.

The Seahawks moved to 1-0 in the league and 1-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fell to 0-1 and 1-4.

Lena Jagielski paced the Seahawks with 12 points, while Robin Cronin had eight, Hailey Ingalls had five, Renee Elhard and Natalie Sieminski each had four, and Ava Jagielski had three.

For Nikiski, Avery White had nine, Shelby Burman had six, Emma Weeks had three, and Savanna Stock, Maggie Grenier and Ashlynne Playle each had two.

Seward boys 41, Nikiski 39

The Seahawks took over the lead in the final minute to notch a Peninsula Conference victory against the Bulldogs.

Seward is 1-0 in the league and 1-1 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-1 and 0-7.

Nikiski led 39-38 entering the final minute, but Ozzy Deel scored for Seward on a post move coming out of a timeout with 59.8 seconds left to play.

The Seahawks then forced a turnover with 20 seconds left, but Ben Ambrosiani missed the front end of a bonus with 11 seconds left. Seward then forced another turnover, and Ambrosiani hit 1 of 2 from the foul line to end the game.

Deel and Nick Ambrosiani each had 13, while Ben Ambrosiani had 11. Bergen Davis and Talon Lemme each had two for the Seahawks.

For the Bulldogs, Seth Payne had 11, Charlie Chamberlain had nine, David Weathers had eight, Braeden Porter had six and Drew Handley had five.

Kenai girls 50, Unalakleet 33

The Kardinals are now 2-0 in the Nome Subway Showdown and 5-0 overall after the Friday victory.

Kenai boys 61, Unalakleet 51

The Kardinals moved to 2-0 at the Nome Subway Showdown and 4-1 overall on Friday.

Jakob Kvasnikoff poured in 25 for the Kards, while Wade James had 17, Luke Armstrong had seven, and Roc Riggle, Daniel McRorie and Bridger Beck each had four.

For Unalakleet, Johnny Soderstrom had 24, Jonathon Katchatag had 21, Paxson Commack had four and Trevin Soderstrom had two.

Monroe Catholic girls 41, Soldotna 31

The Stars fell to 0-2 in the Mt. McKinley Classic in Fairbanks and 2-3 overall with the Friday loss.

Josie Sheridan paced the Stars with 14 points, while Katelyn Morrison had seven, Kaytlin McAnelly had six, and Alex Lee and Tanner Inman each had two.

For the Rams, Maggie Zaverl had 13, Shannel Kovalsky had nine, Miranda Wilkerson had seven, Tatyana Snowden had four, Isa Bond had four, Sophia Stepovich had two and Desiree Redfox had two.

Monroe Catholic boys 57, Soldotna 36

The Stars fell to 0-2 in the Mt. McKinley Classic in Fairbanks and 1-5 overall with the Friday loss.

Jakob Brown pumped in 15 points for Soldotna, while Andrew Pieh had nine, Izaiah Gilbert had six, Will Inman had four and Jace O’Reagan had two.

For the Rams, Billy Bast had 15, Jett McCullough had 11, Jack Mavencamp had 10, Trevor Mahler had nine, Stefan Feux had seven and Armani Smith had five.

Effie Kokrine forfeits to Ninilchik

The Effie Kokrine girls and boys basketball teams did not make it to Ninilchik on Friday for Interior Conference action, resulting in forfeits. The Wolverines girls are now 1-0 and 2-2, while the Wolverines boys are 1-0 and 7-0.

Kenai boys, girls both placed third overall in the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
