Hoops roundup: Seward, Homer notch sweeps

After starting their season 0-5, the Seward girls basketball team is now on a two-game winning streak.

The visiting Seahawks defeated the Bulldogs 44-28 on Tuesday. Both teams now sit at 2-5. Seward avenged a 46-33 defeat on Jan. 28.

Seward got control of the game with a 13-6 lead after the first quarter. That lead still stood at 31-25 after three quarters, then Seward won the final eight minutes by 10.

Shelby Siemanski got 14 points for the Seahawks, while Anevay Ambrosiani pitched in 11. For Nikiski, Lillian Carstens had a game-high 19.

Seward boys 62, Nikiski 40

The visiting Seahawks continued to rebound nicely from a lopsided loss to Soldotna on Thursday.

Saturday, Seward handed Kenai its first loss of the season. Then Tuesday, Seward improved to 4-3 and dropped Nikiski to 1-6 by beating the Bulldogs for the second time this season.

After leading 16-13 after the first quarter, Seward opened up a 31-22 lead at halftime and 44-27 lead after three quarters.

Max Pfeiffenberger had a smooth 23 points, while Levi Deboard had 11, Trey Ingalls had 10 and Sam Koster had nine.

For the Bulldogs, Austin Sutton had 11 and Drew Handley had nine.

Homer girls 30, Kenai 25

After having a three-game winning streak snapped by Soldotna on Saturday, the host Mariners got back to their winning ways Tuesday.

Homer moves to 4-3, while the Kardinals fall to 3-5. Homer also had beaten Kenai 43-20 on Jan. 28.

The Mariners led 12-8 at the half, then 22-12 after three quarters.

Sailey Rhodes paced the Mariners with 14 points, while Emma Beck had 11 and Logan Satathite had eight for the Kards.

Homer boys 63, Kenai 53

The host Mariners avenged their lone loss of the season Tuesday.

Homer moved to 6-1, with the lone loss coming to the Kardinals by a score of 54-48 on Jan. 28. Meanwhile, the Kardinals suddenly find themselves on a two-game losing streak after starting the season 6-0.

The game was tight throughout until Homer opened things up in the fourth quarter. The Mariners led 13-10 after a quarter, but Kenai led 26-24 at the half. Homer came back for a 38-37 lead after three quarters.

Carter Tennison had 23 points for Homer, while Clayton Beachy and Eyoab Knapp had 11 apiece, and Josiah Raymond had nine.

For the Kards, Jordan Kvasnikoff and Jakob Kvasnikoff each had 19.

Homer JV girls 30, CIA 24

The Cook Inlet Academy girls lost to the host Mariners JV on Friday.

Sierra Moffis paced the Eagles with eight points, while Victoria Duggan had seven, Tatum Rozak had five and Gabrielle Pyers and Riley Tucker each had two.

The Eagles fell to 0-3 with the loss.

CIA boys 72, Homer C 33

The visiting Eagles cruised past Homer’s C team Friday. CIA took a 30-3 lead after the first quarter in improving to 2-1 this season.

For the Eagles, Cole Moore had 18, James Boyd had 18, Ethan Boyd had nine, Grizzly Beard had eight, Jeremiah Dillingham had six, Mason Zeigler had six, Michael Schilling had three and Isaac Johnson and Abraham Henderson had two apiece.
