Homer sweeps opening day at carnival

The Homer girls and boys basketball teams both got wins on the opening day of the Homer Winter Carnival on Thursday in Homer. The Ninilchik boys and Redington girls also were victorious.

The Homer girls notched a 52-20 victory over Galena to improve to 6-5 overall.

The Mariners led 15-8 after a quarter, 28-12 at the half and 46-17 after three quarters.

Delilah Harris had 13 to pace Homer, while Sydney Shelby pitched in 11. Also for Homer, Kaylin Anderson had eight, Mel Morris had five, Bethany Engebretsen had four, Lillie Mac Kuhn had four, Sophie Ellison had three, and Olivia Glassman and Minadora Reutov each had two.

Rhianne Isaac led the way for Galena with six, while Alice Tinker had five.

The Homer boys cruised past Galena 66-29 to move to 7-6 overall.

Carter Tennison poured in 19 points for the Mariners, while Tim Hatfield added 12. Also for Homer, Theo McDonough had eight, Nathan Overson had six, Peyton Edens had five, Noah Irons and Ryan Carroll had four, Mylen Johnson had three, Braeden Huffman had two and Lance Seneff had one.

Keldon Meltoon paced the Hawks with 16.

The Redington girls notched a 55-15 victory over Ninilchik. The Wolverines fall to 3-11.

The top scorers for Redington were Lexi Seymore with 19 and Delaney Reavis with 11.

For Ninilchik, Riley Tucker had seven and Taylor Rickard, Rebecca Okonek, Autumn Calabrese and Rian Ofstad all had two.

The Ninilchik boys defeated Redington 74-46. The Wolverines are 11-0. The Class 2A team now has six straight victories over Class 3A or 4A opponents.

Cole Moore had 19 for Ninilchik, while Lukah Kalugin had 15, Landon Colburn had 13 and Justin Trail had 12. Also for Ninilchik, Jaylin Scott had eight, Rowan Mahoney had three, and Blake Lemons and Cody Blossom had two apiece.

The top scorers for Redington were Cort Sandefur with 14 and Logan Seymore with 13.

Today at the tournament, the Galena girls play Ninilchik at 3 p.m., the Galena boys play Ninilchik at 4:30 p.m., the Redington girls play Homer at 6:30 p.m. and the Redington boys play Homer at 8 p.m.

Saturday, the Redington girls play Galena at noon, the Redington boys play Galena at 1:30 p.m., the Ninilchik girls play Homer at 3:30 p.m. and the Ninilchik boys play Homer at 5:30 p.m.

Nikiski girls 32, Glennallen 25

The Bulldogs toppled the Panthers at the Grace Christian Hardwood Classic in Anchorage for their first victory of the season in 14 tries.
