Homer runners take 2 divisions at MCCA Class Challenge

The Homer cross-country running team won a pair of divisions at the Mountain City Christian Academy Class Challenge on Friday at Cheney Lake in Anchorage.

The Mariners nabbed the freshmen-sophomore girls and junior-senior boys divisions. Johannes Bynagle also won the junior-senior boys race.

Isabella Eller of Unalakleet won the freshmen-sophomore girls race with a 3,200-meter time of 13 minutes, 1 second.

Homer put three in the top 10 — Etta Bynagle in second in 13:09, Ahnali Cook in fifth in 14:18 and Abigail Ostrom in seventh at 14:34.

Johannes Bynagle won at 10:05 as the Mariners put six in the top eight — Caleb Bunker in second at 10:05, Jude Rozeboom in fifth at 10:46, Tait Ostrom in sixth at 10:49, Jai Badajos in seventh at 10:50 and Landon Tinsley in eighth at 10:51.

Also in the race, Kenai’s Chase Laker was 10th in 10:58.

The Grace Christian girls won the junior-senior team title, with Unalakleet’s Ourea Busk winning at 12:55.

Homer’s Claira Booz was the runner-up at 13:13, while Kenai’s Teresa Fallon was fourth in 13:20 and Kenai’s Ruby Davis was eighth at 13:59.

MCCA won the freshmen-sophomore boys team title, with Breyden Nottingham of the Lions winning at 10:52.

Homer’s Rio Waltenbaugh was third at 11:05, while Homer’s Gryffyn Linder was eighth in 11:28 and Homer’s Charlie Rustand was 10th in 11:36.

Soldotna’s Tania Boonstra took first place for the girls’ division, leading her team to victory at the meet. The Homer girls’ varsity team placed second overall.
