Homer girls take 3rd at state, SoHi girls take 4th

The Homer girls soccer team took third at the Division II state tournament by toppling North Pole 2-1 on Saturday at West Anchorage.

Maddox Berg and Debbie Weisser scored for Homer, which finishes 13-6-2. Mariners coach Mike Tozzo said in a text message that it was a great season and that he was proud of everyone. Tozzo also said he’s looking forward to next season.

Sela Weisser and Debbie Weisser both received first team all-state.

In the girls championship game, Juneau-Douglas Yadaa.at Kale defeated Grace Christian 3-0.

Soldotna girls 2, Ketchikan 0

The Stars finished 9-8-2 overall by taking fourth place from the Kings.

Goals came from Jolie Widaman, assisted by Morgan Lemm, and Jazzalynn McDonald, assisted by Morgan Lemm and Bay Bloom.

“What a great finish for this year,” SoHi coach Jimmy Love wrote in a text message. “Super proud of how the girls and team came together at the right time.”

The SoHi girls got the sportsmanship award, while Widaman and Katharine Bramante made the all-state team.

Grace Christian boys 4, Kenai 0

The Kardinals fell to 10-7-2 overall after dropping the third-place game to the Grizzlies. Four of Kenai’s losses this season came to Grace.

“Just proud of our guys, played hard to the end,” Kenai coach Shane Lopez wrote in a text message. “We’ll miss our seniors, they were a big part of leading and growing this young squad.”

Kenai did win the academic and sportsmanship awards at state, while Wade James and Gavin Langham were named all-state. Kylie Verkuilen made all-state for the Kenai girls.

Juneau-Douglas Yadaa.at Kale topped Thunder Mountain 4-2 for the state title, while Palmer defeated Ketchikan 1-0 for fourth place.
