Homer boys nab 2nd at George Plumley Invite

The Homer boys cross-country team finished second at the George Plumley Invite on Saturday at Palmer High School.

The state cross-country meet will be in Palmer on Saturday, Oct. 4, so this meet drew runners from all over the state.

Unlike at state, where the runners are broken up into three divisions, all the varsity runners were in one division Saturday.

The Division II Mariners still finished second with 105 points to Division I South, which had 83. Homer can’t get too comfortable, though, because Division II Grace Christian loomed in fourth at 178.

Also from the peninsula, Soldotna was 13th, Kenai Central was 24th and Seward was 25th.

East’s Katahdin Staples, the Division I champ last year, ran the 5-kilometer course at 16 minutes, 18 seconds, while Breyden Nottingham of Mountain City Christian Academy was second at 16:29.

The peninsula had three runners in the top 20 and they were all from Homer — Johannes Bynagle in fourth at 16:38, Caleb Bunker in sixth at 16:47 and Tait Ostrom in 14th at 17:17.

Division I Chugiak was the top girls team at 59, while Seward led all Division II squads at 182. Soldotna was seventh.

Hailee Giacobbe, the defending Division I champ, won her eighth straight Alaska cross-country race dating back to last season. She ran 19:24.

Soldotna put a pair on the top 10 — Sophia Jedlicki at 19:56 and Tania Boonstra at 20:01.

Olive Jordan led Seward in 17th at 20:48, while Juniper Ingalls was 19th for the Seahawks in 20:51.
