Friday prep hockey: SoHi, Homer pick up conference wins

The visiting Soldotna hockey team held off Juneau-Douglas: Yadaa.at Kale 4-3 in Northern Lights Conference action Friday.

The Stars move to 7-5-2 overall and 2-1 in the league, while the Crimson Bears fall to 1-6-1 and 0-3.

Soldotna coach Anthony Zurfluh texted he felt fortunate to get the win because the Stars were missing three due to suspension, and three more were not able to make the trip.

The Stars will have the three suspended players back in the lineup Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when the series concludes.

In the first period, the Crimson Bears used the power play to get the upper hand when Matthew Plang scored.

Riley Cronin and Marshall DeRaeve had the Stars up 2-1 headed to the second period.

Emilio Holbrook tied it in the second period for Juneau, but Noah Crabtree scored unassisted to make it 3-2 headed to the third period.

DeRaeve put the Stars up 4-2 with an unassisted, power-play strike with 7:16 to play.

Plang scored with 4:33 left, but SoHi goalie Brycen Clyde, who made 27 saves, was able to keep a clean sheet the rest of the way. Caleb Friend stopped 26 for the Crimson Bears.

Homer 4, Kodiak 1

The Mariners won for the first time this season by picking up a Northern Lights Conference victory at Kevin Bell Ice Arena in Homer.

Homer moved to 1-6 and 1-1, while the Bears fall to 0-9 and 0-3.

Seamus Hatton got Homer started in the first period with an unassisted goal, but Collin Gibbs tied it for the Bears less than a minute later.

The Mariners then took control in the second period when Austin Pitzman, Hatton and Landon Turner scored to stretch the lead to 4-1. Hatton’s goal came on the power play.

Reace Brothers made 16 saves for Homer, while Simon Lonheim stopped 13 for Kodiak.

The two sides face off again Saturday at 1 p.m.
