Friday hoops: SoHi girls notch win in San Diego

The Soldotna girls basketball team opened play at the massive So Cal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego with a 51-23 victory over Point Loma, California.

The tournament has just short of 100 teams and 12 different brackets. The Stars are competing in the NAIA Bronze Bracket.

SoHi moved to 4-0 on the season by topping Point Loma 51-23.

Alyssa McDonald led the way for the Stars with 12 points, while Hope Hillyer had 9 and Ryan Queen had 8. Also, Anaulie Sedivy, Isabelle Cruz and Juliet Innes had 5, Laurel Johnson had 4 and Anika Jedlicka had 2.

For Point Loma, Avery Hedman had 9, River Hargett had 5, Hannah Smith had 4 and Eva Cruz had 3.

The Stars face Paloma Valley, California, in the semifinals Saturday at 6:30 p.m. AKST. Paloma defeated San Leandro, California, 37-30 in the first round.

Joe Floyd Tournament

The Homer girls and boys opened up their seasons with losses to Monroe Catholic in the 56th annual Joe Floyd Basketball Tournament on Friday in Kodiak.

The Mariners girls lost 60-11 to the Rams.

For Homer, Channing Lowney had 5, while Keagan Niebuhr, Mally Im and Madalyn Miotke each had 2.

For Monroe, Leila Church had 14, Leyton Cortez and Desiree Redfox had 9, Lydia Felix had 7, Emersyn Cortez had 6, Chany Turiel, Shannel Kovalsky and Trinity Turiel had 4, and Shilo Kovalsky had 3.

The Homer boys took an 83-29 loss.

Einar Pederson paced the Mariners with 9, while Henry Wedvik had 7, Ben Engebretsen had 5, and Preston Stanislaw and CJ Burns had 4 apiece.

The Rams received 21 from Jett McCullough, 16 from Adam Geyer and 12 from Armani Smith. Also, Tucker Williams had 8, Zavier Olson had 7, Isaiah Snow and James Trieflaff had 6, Cooper Wentz had 5 and Harry Roberts had 2.

Saturday at the round-robin tourney, the Homer girls play Kodiak at 3:30 p.m., and the Homer boys play the hosts at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Homer girls play Bethel at 1 p.m. and the Homer boys face the Warriors at 2:30 p.m.

Capital City Classic

The Kenai girls and Soldotna boys both opened with losses Friday at the George Houston Capital City Classic in Juneau.

The Kardnals girls took a 43-34 loss to Chugiak. Kenai falls to 1-3.

For the Kardinals, Bryleigh Williams led the way with 10, while Ellsi Miller had 9, Evelyn Cooper had 5, Gracee Every and Willow Graham had 4, and McKenzie Spence had 2.

For the Mustangs, Kaitlyn Farr had 14, Natalie Horn had 11, Petra Knox had 7, Emily Desmond had 4, Sadie Bell had 3, and Ronnie Garrett and Emily Mullin had 2.

The SoHi boys took a 63-40 loss to Federal Way, Washington. The Stars fell to 2-2.

Izaiah Gilbert poured in 26 for SoHi, while Jayden Stuyvesant had 7, Easton Hawkins had 5 and Liam Peck had 2.

For Federal Way, Jacob Hurskin had 17, Brayden McVey had 16 and Angelo Williams had 11. Also, Geron White and Saxon Niles had 6, and Oscar Garcia and Justin Calcote had 3.

Saturday at the round-robin tournament, the Kenai girls face Juneau-Douglas: Yadaa.at Kale at 5 p.m., while the SoHi boys face the Crimson Bears at 7 p.m.

Sunday, the Kenai girls tip with Klawock at 1 p.m., while the Soldotna boys go against Cordova at 3 p.m.
