The Homer boys basketball team defeated Service 50-45 on Saturday to take fourth place at the 28th Annual Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School in Anchorage.
The Mariners, who move to 3-3 overall, took a big lead in the game and were able to withstand a Service comeback. Homer led 16-6 after the first period, 29-16 at halftime and 44-26 after three quarters before getting outscored 19-6 in the fourth quarter.
Carter Tennison had a monster game for the Mariners, scoring 22 points on 9 of 11 shooting. That efficiency helped Homer shoot 54% for the game, while Service was at 38%.
Also for Homer, Peyton Edens had 11, Noah Irons had five, and Tim Hatfield, Ryan Carroll and Braden Huffman each had four.
For Service, Adlai Davenport and William Lindsey each had 12, Mackeenan Morgan had 11, Coan Niclai had six, and Deandre Morgan and Hayden Fuller each had two.
Dimond, behind tourney MVP Luke Johnston, won the tournament with a 64-59 victory over Grace Christian. Palmer took third by topping Anchorage Christian Schools 54-49.
The all-tournament team was Homer’s Carter Tennison, Mt. Edgecumbe’s Mason Ivanoff, Dimond’s Marek Hajdukovich, Palmer’s Evan Rothenbuhler, Grace’s Sloan Lentfer, Matt Sanders of ACS, Palmer’s Kael Galliher, Service’s Adlai Davenport, Grace’s Luke Lentfer and Dimond’s Xzavier Baker.
Mt. Edgecumbe boys 55, Soldotna 53
The Braves edged the Stars for seventh place at the Alaska Prep Shootout in Anchorage on Saturday.
Soldotna (3-6 overall) opened with a 22-11 lead after the first quarter, but Mt. Edgecumbe steadily ate into that lead the rest of the game. SoHi led 31-23 at halftime and 43-41 after three quarters.
A balanced scoring attack got the job done for the Braves. Mason Ivanoff had 14, while Jacob Friske and Rylan Armstrong each had 12 and Keenan Kashevarof had 10. Shane Angnaboogok had four, while Connor Journey added three.
For the Stars, Ethan Sewell poured in 23 points, while Andrew Pieh pitched in 10. Also for SoHi, Zac Buckbee and Daniel McRorie each had seven, Hamilton Hunt had four and Will Inman had two.
Houston girls 40, Kenai Central 25
The host Kardinals dropped to 3-2 overall with the nonconference loss to the Hawks on Saturday.
Houston got out of the gates quickly, taking a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and 24-11 advantage at halftime.
Abbie Baird had 14 to pace the Hawks, while Emily Bitler pitched in 12. Also for Houston, Lacy Graham had six, Anna Whitted had four, and Grace Gillespie and Abbie Allen had two.
For the Kards, Emma Beck and Amber Nash each had eight, Logan Satathite had five, and Erin Koziczkowski and Denali Bernard each had two.
Houston boys 68, Kenai Central 20
The visiting Hawks dropped the Kardinals to 1-4 overall with a dominant nonconference Saturday victory.
Bridger Beck and Caleb Litke each paced the Kardinals with five points.
Redington girls 39, Seward 30
The host Seahawks fell to 0-5 overall with the nonconference loss to the Huskies on Saturday.
Redington trailed 7-4 after a period but led 15-11 at halftime. Seward tied the game at 23 before the Huskies won the fourth quarter 16-7.
Lexi Seymore pumped in 24 points for Redington, while Alizoe Crume had seven, Adi Pitcher had four, and Destiny Simmons and Delaney Reavis each had two.
For the Seahawks, Shelby Sieminski led the way with 14 points, while Hannah Schilling had seven, Hailey Ingalls had four, Lena Jagielski had three and Robin Cronin had two.
Redington boys 54, Seward 44
The host Seahawks dropped to 1-4 overall with the Saturday nonconference loss to the Huskies.
Redington took a 14-7 lead after the first quarter and then led throughout the contest.
Trevor Bowman led the way with 15 for the Huskies, while Wayde Bowman had 14. Also for Redington, Logan Seymore had seven, Cort Sandefur and Mason Brouillett had five, and Doyle Bond and Bryce Murdock each had four.
For the Seahawks, Ozzy Deel had 12, Tommy Cronin had 10, Ben Ambrosiani had nine, Bergen Davis had seven, Nick Ambrosiani had four and Peter Spanos had two.
Kenai Central girls 45, Redington 34
The host Kardinals topped the Huskies on Friday in nonconference play. Kenai, which also defeated Redington 43-38 on Dec. 16, moves to 3-1 overall.
The Kards jumped out of the gates to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter. That advantage would hold up the entire game, and Kenai led 19-10 at the half and 28-19 after the third quarter.
Emma Beck poured in 20 points for the Kardinals, while Logan Satathite had nine, Erin Koziczkowski had six, Denali Bernard had four, and Malerie Nunn, Emilee Wilson and Amber Nash pitched in two points apiece.
For the Huskies, Destiny Simmons had 12 points, Lexi Seymore had eight, Adilyn Pitcher had seven, Alizae Crume had five and Andi Robson had two.
Redington boys 51, Kenai Central 43
The visiting Huskies pulled away for a nonconference victory Friday. Kenai, which falls to 1-3 overall, also lost to Redington 55-31 on Dec. 16.
The Kards had a 14-11 lead after a quarter, but Redington led 25-20 at the half and 41-27 after three quarters.
Wayde Bowman had 12 points for the Huskies, while Trevor Bowman and Cort Sandefur added 10. Also for Redington, Logan Seymore had nine, Bryce Murdock had five, Doyle Bond had three and Mason Brouillet had two.
For the Kardinals, Caleb Litke had 12, Bridger Beck had 11, Wade James had nine, Joe Hamilton had seven, Ky Calvert had three and Hayden Hanson had two.
Houston girls 52, Seward 50
The Hawks took a big lead in the first quarter and then held off the Seahawks in nonconference action Friday in Seward. The Seahawks are 0-4 overall.
Houston led 15-5 after the first period and 20-17 at the half, but Seward led 36-33 after three quarters.
Anna Whitted paced Houston with 16 points, while Emily Bitler pitched in 13. Also for the Hawks, Abbie Baird had seven, Dallas Winter had six, Grace Gillespie and Lacy Graham each had four and Abbie Allen had two.
Shelby Sieminski pumped in 24 for Seward, while Lena Jagielski contributed 17. Also for the Seahawks, Wren Dougherty had five, and Renee Elhard and Robin Cronin each had two.
Houston boys 54, Seward 43
The visiting Hawks dropped the Seahawks to 1-3 overall Friday in nonconference play.
Houston led 21-3 after a quarter and 31-12 at halftime. Seward was able to tighten the final score by winning the fourth quarter 17-9.
Hayden Howard led the way for the Hawks with 19 points, while Cody Wyriek had nine, Hunter Jefferson had seven, Braden Cork had five, Keldin Nicoll, Cole Taylor and Deegan Van Dussen had four, and Noah Whitted had two.
Tommy Cronin paced the Seahawks with 17, while Nick Ambrosiani added 12 and Ozzy Deel had 10. Peter Spanos and Ben Ambrosiani each had two.
