Former Kenai River Brown Bears forward Jack Gessert has committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Brown University.

Brown is an Ivy League school and plays its hockey in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Gessert played parts of three seasons for the Bears in becoming the team’s all-time leader in goals. In 2013-14, he appeared in 58 games and had 13 goals and 18 assists.

After narrowly missing making the Green Bay (Wisconsin) Gamblers of the Tier I United States Hockey League, Gessert played in 53 games for the Bears in 2014-15 and had 27 goals and 21 assists.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder from Novi, Michigan, was named the captain of the squad before this campaign and had nine goals and 10 assists in 30 games.

That left him with 49 career goals with the Bears. Soldotna native Brad Duwe is next on the list with 41.

Over the holiday break, with losses mounting for the Bears, Gessert was dealt to the Chicago Steel of the USHL. There, he has four goals and an assist in 12 games.
