Football roundup: Nikiski gets 1st win of season

Nikiski rolled to its first victory of the year with a 24-6 win Saturday over Ketchikan.

The Bulldogs (1-2) got two short scoring runs in the first quarter from senior Ian Johnson, then Tyler Olson added a 40-yard touchdown in the second quarter to give Nikiski an 18-0 halftime lead.

Cody Handley added a long insurance run with 6 minutes, 40 seconds, remaining in the game to ice the win.

Homer 66, Valdez 0

The Mariners scored early and often in a blowout win Saturday over Valdez.

Homer improved to 2-1 this season with the win.

Junior quarterback Teddy Croft shredded the Valdez secondary with four touchdown passes on just six pass attempts for 159 yards. Croft connected with Dawson Felde for two scoring catches, Joe Ravin for one 68-yard touchdown catch and Noah Fisk for 13 yards.

Croft got the scoring started just over four minutes in with a long bomb to Ravin. On Homer’s next possession, Chris Cudaback scored from a yard out and Noah Fisk got the two-point run to make it 15-0.

Croft hit Felde for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds left in the first quarter to give the Mariners a 22-0 lead.

Homer then erupted for 27 points in the second quarter to put the game away, leading 51-0 by halftime.

Homer had nine different players that got carries, adding up to 112 rushing yards. Valdez only managed six ground yards, their only offense of the day.

Houston 34, Seward 0

Houston prevailed in a Division III state semifinal rematch Friday evening with a shutout over Seward.

Monroe 26, Voznesenka 9

Monroe picked up a second straight win against Peninsula Conference competition Saturday by defeating Voznesenka in Homer. The Rams toppled Nikiski 7-6 a week prior.

The Cougars are 0-1 after skipping the first two weeks of the prep season due to low numbers.
