Troopers involved in shooting in Nikiski

A branch of the Alaska State Troopers is investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday afternoon in Nikiski

Troopers at the Soldotna post got a tip Wednesday that a man with a felony arrest warrant was at a house in Nikiski, troopers wrote in an online dispatch report. When they arrived and tried to take him into custody, the man “drove a vehicle at a trooper,” according to the dispatch.

“Multiple troopers fired upon the suspect,” troopers wrote. “The man was subsequently transported from the scene to receive treatment.”

The Nikiski Fire Department was called out to the incident in the Island Lake Road area off the Kenai Spur Highway around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Deputy Chief Trent Burnett. First responders transported one injured patient, he said, who was then transferred to LifeMed. Burnett did not have additional details.

A trooper on scene said the Alaska Bureau of Investigations, a branch of the troopers, is investigating the shooting. Megan Peters, public information officer for the troopers, said this is section of the Alaska State Troopers that handles trooper-involved shooting incidents.

“ABI is the unit within our department that does investigate those,” she said.

No troopers were injured during the shooting incident, and each trooper that fired a weapon has been placed on administrative leave according to department policy, the dispatch states.

“The names of the troopers will be released at the conclusion of the administrative leave,” troopers wrote.
