Strong winds caused power outages on the Kenai Peninsula on Friday.
A special weather statement published Thursday evening by the National Weather Service said that “strong southwesterly winds” would impact much of the western Kenai Peninsula, especially on the coastline from Anchor Point to Nikiski. The winds, the service wrote, were following in the wake of a large weather system that is moving eastward across the area.
Winds were expected to diminish by Friday evening.
“People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around by the strong winds and use caution while traveling,” the service wrote. “Trees are still fully leafed and will be unusually vulnerable to damage from the strong winds.”
At around noon on Friday, Homer Electric Association was reporting outages largely concentrated in Funny River and Sterling that had left around 900 people without power. Smaller outages were also reported in and around Nikiski, Kenai, Soldotna, Fritz Creek and Seldovia.
