The Soldotna City Council on Wednesday approved around $400,000 in capital spending for the current fiscal year, including a new generator for the Soldotna Police Department and design work for improvements to the Soldotna Public Library.
A memo by Soldotna Public Works Director Kyle Kornelis, included with an ordinance unanimously enacted this week, says that this year’s list of capital projects is “nominal compared to some past years.”
This year, the city is directing $15,000 to supplement its storefront improvement grants; $70,000 is going to design a slew of improvements to the library’s meeting rooms, reading room, circulation desk and other areas; $65,000 will be spent for construction of an outdoor sand storage facility; $115,000 is marked for design of replacement roofs at the city’s mechanic shop; and $130,000 will be spent to purchase and install a new generator at Soldotna Police Department.
The city’s five-year capital improvement plan, featured in a June 11 work session of the council, describes increasing investments in each of the five years — this year’s $395,000 spend quickly dwarfed by $2.2 million in 2027 on the way to nearly $13 million in 2030. The plan includes significant spending for the city’s Riverfront Redevelopment Project, improvements to the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex, Soldotna City Hall, and several improvements to the city’s parks.
