This week is the last chance folks will have to earn vouchers through Soldotna’s “Holding Our Own” shop local program, and there’s still $85,000 left to give away.

Under the program, shoppers of participating Soldotna businesses who spend $200 on discretionary items receive an additional $100 voucher of their choice to spend in town.

The Soldotna City Council voted to set aside $350,000 in excess CARES dollars for the shop local program earlier this year.

According to a news release from the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce, as of last Thursday $225,000 had already been claimed in vouchers, but another $85,000 was left to distribute.

Shanon Davis, the executive director of the Soldotna chamber, said in an email that she’d rather be able to distribute the $85,000 in CARES funds locally, rather than returning it to the federal government.

In the news release she said she encourages Soldotna shoppers to turn in their receipts as soon as possible.

“This program is a win for everyone involved,” Davis said. “Shoppers get $100 extra to spend during the holidays, and the businesses get an influx of cash during this critical season.”

Consumers may submit up to 10 receipts for items purchased at participating restaurants and cafes, as well as on merchandise like clothing, books, jewelry and collectibles. Ineligible to submit for a voucher are purchases like groceries and fuel, as well as mortgage or rent payments and medical bills.

The last day to submit receipts either online or in person at the Soldotna chamber is Dec. 15.
