As the end of summer approaches, many on the Kenai Peninsula begin to awaken from the long, July stupor and prepare for Salmonfest. The annual event is not only a landmark tradition for many, but also helps sustain the critical work of many local conservation groups. According to their website, Salmonfest has donated more than $300,000 to salmon-related initiatives across Alaska since 2015.
An annual event since its original inception as “Salmonstock” in 2011, Salmonfest is now in its 15th year. This year’s festival will take place from Aug. 1-3 at the Kenai Peninsula Fairgrounds in Ninilchik.
Salmonfest tickets have sold out before the event’s start for four consecutive years, according to an email from the event organizers. As of Tuesday afternoon, tickets were still available, and the organizers noted that this year’s pre-event ticket sales are outpacing those of previous years. The event is still seeking volunteers to assist over the weekend. Those who work at least one four-hour shift a day are given a three-day pass to the festival. To apply to be a volunteer, you can visit salmonfestalaska.org or email volunteers@salmonfestalaska.org.

The Allman Betts Band is a rock band that features three sons of the founding members of the Allman Brothers Band: Devon Allman, Duane Betts and Berry Oakley. The band will play Sunday at 5:45 p.m. on the River Stage.

Smoked Salmon Bowl
The fifth annual “Smoked Salmon Super Bowl Competition” will return at this year’s festival. Smoked salmon from smokehouses across the state will be judged by a panel that includes top musical acts from the festival, as well as local chefs and fishermen. The addition of an amateur category this year will expand the competition. Winners will be announced on Sunday, Aug. 3. You can register for the competition online at salmonfestalaska.org.
