A Friend of Sixty Years

I have a friend of 60 years,

who often helps me with my tears.

I have a friend of 60 years,

and for this I know,

she helps me with my woe.

I have a friend of 60 years,

I love how she tells me how it is.

Many years ago we would swing and sing,

we didn’t know then, the heartaches that life would bring.

We didn’t know that the truth of our childhoods,

little girls, who only understood,

that Mom and Dad were perfect and strong.

We didn’t know then that they could be so weak or so wrong.

We didn’t know they could break our

hearts until the snow froze us down into the ground.

Thanks God, that we could come around,

to understand that they weren’t bound, to prove themselves sound.

They only did what they could, their best,

and we found that we would finally come to gratefulness.

I have a friend of 60 years.
