Like the fireweed blooming in fields around town, Homer Council on the Arts’ activities are bursting onto the scene for all to enjoy.
Broadway Bootcamp Performance
By introducing material from Broadway productions, Homer’s annual Broadway Bootcamp provides students with the opportunity to process and express complex emotions through character development and performance. This week, students of all ages have been learning and memorizing material they will showcase for the community in a fully choreographed, staged and costumed performance. Fall Ceramics Class Series
Registration is now open for the August and September series which includes K-2 Ceramics, 3-6 Ceramics, Beginning Wheel Throwing, Intermediate Wheel Throwing and Ceramics Open Studio in the HCOA Ceramics Studio. Class schedule, fee information and registration at homerart.org.
Fireweed Chinese Brush Painting with Sharlene Cline
Participants will use traditional techniques of brush loading, color mixing and careful brush strokes to create a Fireweed painting. All skill levels are welcome, and all materials will be provided. Svetlana and the New York Collective, A Night at the Speakeasy — A night of hot jazz and sultry vocals that will transport the audience to the underground Prohibition-era speakeasies with an intimate atmosphere and captivating music. Take 3, “Where Rock meets Bach” — A unique trio of violin, cello and piano that brings together the power and energy of rock music with the sophistication and beauty of classical composers. Zodiac Trio — With clarinet, violin and piano as their instruments, the Zodiac Trio has been on the forefront of innovative programming, presenting 20th century masterpieces alongside new works and acclaimed original arrangements. Songs by Female Composers — Soprano Mari Hahn and pianist Tamara McCoy present a concert featuring a diverse array of musical periods and styles, featuring women composers, including historical composers Barbara Strozzi, Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn and Nadia Boulanger, French chansons by Canadian composer Ramona Luengen and the iconic Edith Piaf, along with their own compositions. Oktoberfest — HCOA’s 4th Annual Oktoberfest celebration features music by Alaska Blaskapelle. Break out your lederhosen, plait your hair and come out and enjoy live music, good food and dancing while enjoying local brews. Bring your own stein or glass for a discount on beer or purchase a limited edition HCOA Oktoberfest stein made by ceramics teacher Robert Ostman. Saturday, Sept. 6, 6-9 p.m. at the Homer Seaplane Base. $30 Adult/$15 Youth ages 6 to 18/Children 5 years and under free. HCOA Open Call for Art Opportunities
Fabricated: An Open Call for Fiber Arts — HCOA invites all Southern Kenai Peninsula artists working with fiber, textiles, yarn, felt and fabric to the 2025 Fiber Arts Showcase “Fabricated.” This call is open to all ages and abilities with no prompts or themes. Each artist may submit up to three artworks. At least one artwork must be for sale. Submissions are open through Aug. 30. Information and submission at homerart.org.
Gallery Proposals for 2026: An Open Call — Artists working in all media are invited to apply, with preference going to Alaskan artists and priority to those residing on the Kenai Peninsula. Applications will automatically be considered for the South Peninsula Hospital gallery as well. Those interested are encouraged to read HCOA’s Gallery Exhibit Guidelines before completing the application. Proposals are due by Tuesday, Sept. 30, 11:59 p.m. Information, guidelines and submission at homerart.org.
Fun with 5x6x7: Call for Art — This year, expanding their annual 5×7 call for art, HCOA is adding a third dimension for artists to experiment with, offering artists the same freedom to create with more variety in shapes and sizes. There are no prompts or subjects and this call for art is open to all mediums, ages and abilities. Each artist may submit up to six works. Submissions are now open through Saturday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. Information and submission at homerart.org.
Communitywide Open Call for Art Opportunities
KBBI’s Mug Design Contest — KBBI AM 890 is currently accepting design submissions for their annual member’s mug. The design should reflect an interpretation or appreciation of the station, its programming and Homer, and must contain the words KBBI AM 890 Homer and Seward 88.1 FM and the artist’s signature. All mediums are welcomed, and artists may submit more than one piece for consideration. Submissions must be received by Monday, Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. Information and submission at kbbi.org.
Bunnell Street Arts Center’s Ursa Major Fund — Bunnell’s Ursa Major Fund provides grants for artist-led, risk-taking, public-facing projects that inspire curiosity, engagement, dialogue and respect for cultural integrity. Grants support the independent, self-organized work of Alaska artists or artist collectives to create new work, engage their communities and experiment with possibilities. Statewide information sessions will be held via Zoom on Monday, Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. Applications open Monday, Sept. 1. Information and submission at bunnellarts.org.
