Kenai City Council Member Robert Peterkin resigned from his position on the Kenai City Council Friday, according to a press release from Kenai Mayor Brian Gabriel.

According to the release, Peterkin said that it was “an honor and pleasure” to serve Kenai residents but he was “no longer able to devote his full attention to the position.”

Peterkin was elected to the council in Oct. 2018 and his term would have expired in Oct. of 2021.

“As Mayor, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Peterkin for his service to the City and its residents,” Gabriel said in the release. “Mr. Peterkin’s optimism, community spirit and creative problem solving that he brought to the Council will be missed and difficult to replace.”

A timeline for filling the vacancy has not yet been determined, Gabriel said.
