On Saturday American Red Cross volunteers and Kenai Firefighters visited homes to install free smoke detectors. Their fire safety education effort concentrated on the neighborhoods around Lilac Lane, where a gas pipeline ruptured by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake caused a home explosion on Jan. 24.

Kenai Fire Marshal Tommy Carver said a new partnership planned with the Red Cross will allow his department to offer free smoke detector installation and servicing to Kenai residents in the future. Carver said that once the partnership is in effect, the Kenai Fire Department will do smoke detector checks and installations whenever it makes a call to a residence.

Red Cross Disaster Program Manager Shiloh Powell said people interested in a check or installation can make appointments through the Red Cross by calling 907-301-5476.
