Thursday: Kenai softball sweeps Redington

The visiting Kenai Central softball team swept a pair of Northern Lights Conference softball games from Redington on Thursday.

The Kardinals defeated the Huskies 16-6 and 35-18. The Kards are now 2-0 in the league and 5-3 overall.

In the 16-6 victory, the game was tied at 4 after three innings, but Kenai took control with seven runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth.

For the Kards, Kayani Whicker was 3 for 5 with two runs, Kailey Stynsberg was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs, and Avery Ellis was 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Also, Isabel Thomas had two runs, Caitlyn Crapps had two runs, Blakeley Jorgensen had three runs, Seylor Tomrdle had two RBIs and Avia Miller had three RBIs.

On the mound, Lola McEwen gave up two runs — one earned — on no hits in 1 1-3 innings, while Ellis gave up four runs — three earned — and three hits in 3 2-3 innings.

In the 35-18 game, a few big innings carried Kenai. The Kards scored 14 in the top of the first, but the Huskies led 16-15 after three innings. Kenai then scored five in the fourth and 15 in the fifth.

The Kardinals took 30 walks in the game. Kennah Gregory was 4 for 5 with six runs and three RBIs.

Also, EmmaLee Elordi had four runs, Jorgensen, Crapps, Ellis and Whicker had three runs, and Love Carter-Hendriks, Raegan Jolley, Dani Bennett and Jessie Johnson had two runs.

Gregory gave up 10 runs in an inning, while Johnson gave up six runs — two earned — in an inning, and Ellis gave up two runs — one earned — in three innings.

Palmer sweeps Homer

The host Moose notched a Northern Lights Conference sweep of the Mariners on Thursday.

Palmer won 25-2 and 17-15. Homer is 0-2 in the league and 2-6 overall.

In the 25-2 game, Palmer scored 15 runs in the first inning and 10 in the second inning. Ali Gall had the lone hit for Homer.

Keagan Niebuhr gave up 15 runs — nine earned — in 1 2-3 innings, Katie Hallam gave up six runs without getting an out, and Almalinda Norman gave up four runs — three earned — in one-third of an inning.

In the 17-15 game, Homer trailed 6-5 after the first inning, the game was tied at 12 after the second inning, and Palmer scored five in the third before Homer answered with three.

Niebuhr was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Gall had two runs and two RBIs, Jessica Plumlee had three runs and two RBIs, and Stella Condon had two runs and three RBIs. Piper Arno and Amakah Stineff added two runs.

Niebuhr went all three innings, giving up 17 runs, with just one being earned.

Soldotna knocks off Houston

The visiting Soldotna softball team defeated Houston 16-3 in Northern Lights Conference action Thursday.

The Stars are 1-0 in the league and 4-2-1 overall.

Tatum Cooper pitched all four innings for the Stars.

At the plate, Bella Gares had a double and a triple, Alyssa McDonald had a triple, Cooper had a pair of doubles, and Joscelynn Carson and Riley Whitehead each had doubles.
