Thursday hoops: Ninilchik boys open Cordova tourney with decisive win

The Ninilchik boys opened up the 41st Annual Cordova Tip-Off with a 58-16 victory over Nenana on Thursday. The Wolverines are now 6-1 overall.

Kade McCorison had another big night for Ninilchik, pouring in 32 points. Also, Rowan Mahoney had 11, Max Russell had 7, Brant Mill and Kannon Hughes had 3, and Carter Lemons had 2.

The Nenana girls topped Ninilchik 58-19 as the Wolverines fell to 3-3.

Riley Tucker paced Ninilchik with 8, while Taylor Rickard had 5, Addi McCorison had 3, Klohie Hughes had 2 and Kylee Rickard had 1.

Donlin Gold Invitational in Bethel

The Homer girls gained some revenge on Bethel on Thursday. At the Rus Hitchcock Tip Off in Nikiski on Jan. 11, the Mariners lost to Bethel 58-48. Thursday, Homer won 50-42 to move to 4-5 overall.

Channing Lowney led the effort with 15, while Sydney Shelby had 12, Minadora Reutov had 7, Mally Im had 6, Juliann Techie had 4, and Lillie Mae Kuhn and Keagan Niebuhr had 2.

Allie Alexie paced Bethel with 18, while Kyana Harpak had 11, Briella Herron had 8, Payton Boney had 3 and Isabel Lieb had 2.

The Bethel boys topped Homer 76-47 as the Mariners fell to 2-7.

Madden Cockroft paced Bethel with 19, while Greg Turner had 16, Aaron Mute had 13, Jackson Iverson had 8, Paul Dyment and Ellis Johnson had 5, Mason Berlin had 4, and Brian Guest and Ethan Wheeler had 3.

For Homer, Lucas Story had 17, while CJ Burns had 8, Jamen Anderson had 6, Riley Huffman had 5, Benjamin Engebretsen, Einar Pederson and Spencer Dye had 3, and Nathan Overson had 2.

Lumen Christi Classic Basketball Tournament

The Cook Inlet Academy boys opened tournament play Thursday with a 60-30 victory over Grace Christian’s junior varsity. The Eagles move to 5-2 overall.

Ian McGarry pumped in 27 points, while Alek McGarry added 23. Also for CIA, Brandt Rollman had 6 and Jeremy Dillingham had 4.

For Grace JV, Chris Jones had 13, while Caleb Dale and Royce Rock had 6, and Joe Adolfae had 5.

The Shaktoolik girls topped CIA 90-20 as the Eagles fell to 0-7.

For Shaktoolik, Naomi Savetilik had 26, Jasmine Takak had 19, Harmony Jackson had 13, June O’Conner had 10, Autumn Curtis had 7, Madison Katchatag had 6, Raelene Auliye had 5 and Kelly Hunt had 4.

For CIA, Ella Rollman had 12, while Maria Smith had 6 and Rebekah Dillingham had 2.

Homer boys, Soldotna girls place 1st in ski invitational

Soldotna’s Tania Boonstra took first place for the girls’ division, leading her team to victory at the meet. The Homer girls’ varsity team placed second overall.

Kenai boys, girls both placed third overall in the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
