Sports briefs: SoHi boys top Kenai, Eagle River in shootout

The Soldotna varsity boys came out 2-1 in the Al Howard Shootout last weekend.

The Soldotna High School varsity boys basketball team went 2-1 during the Al Howard Shootout this past weekend.

The boys lost a close battle against Ninilchik, 40-47, but rebounded to beat the Kenai Central High School Kardinals 56-48 in a hard-fought match-up. SoHi ended the tournament with a big win over Eagle River, 55-28.

Notable performances included senior Jayden Stuyvesant, who returned to play from injury and led the team in scoring while playing very limited minutes. Junior Scottie Bieber was selected to the All-Tournament team and senior Bryan Berg won the free throw contest.

SoHi is currently 7-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Stars will face off against Colony in home games on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Homer boys, Soldotna girls place 1st in ski invitational

Soldotna’s Tania Boonstra took first place for the girls’ division, leading her team to victory at the meet. The Homer girls’ varsity team placed second overall.

Kenai boys, girls both placed third overall in the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
