Homer football takes down Kodiak

The Homer football team defeated Kodiak 58-6 in Mid Alaska Conference play on Friday at Homer High School.

The Mariners are 3-2 overall and 2-0 in conference, while the Bears are 0-5 and 0-2.

With Preston Stanislaw out due to injury at quarterback, Homer turned to CJ Burns.

“With Preston getting the bulk of the reps all season, CJ hasn’t gotten many reps,” Homer head coach Justin Zank said. “Last week, he was actually sick two of the days, so he didn’t have a lot of reps before getting thrown into the game.”

In the first half, Burns threw two interceptions and fumbled twice. Nikifor Reutov also fumbled.

“Once he calmed down, he did really well,” Zank said of Burns.

Zank said the defense was playing well the whole game, with Donovan Milstead playing well on the line.

The Mariners defense caused seven turnovers, with Austin Briscoe scoring on an interception and Jaydan Stanish recovering a fumble in the end zone.

“And then we finally started executing together in the second quarter,” Zank said of the offense. “And we kind of exploded in points in the second quarter because it was 44-6 at halftime.”

Zank said Burns rushed for a touchdown and threw a scoring pass to Michael Farmer, who scored for the first time this season.

The Homer coach also said Justus Grimes had a few touchdowns, while Joaquin Jackson also scored on a rush.

Homer stays in the conference to host Barrow for homecoming at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Whalers are 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the league.

“They’re much, much bigger than us, so we’re going to have to try to utilize our speed against them,” Zank said. “It’s a big game, and should be a good game, too. It’s a tough matchup for us.”
