Weekend volleyball: Kenai, Nikiski, Seward, Homer all sweep weekend conference contests

The host Kenai Central volleyball team registered a sweep in the Southcentral Conference on Friday and Saturday, defeating Redington then Houston.

The Kardinals now stand at 10-1 in nontournament play and 8-0 in the league.

The Kardinals defeated Redington 25-21, 25-8 and 25-14.

Jaycie Castillo had 28 digs for the Kards, while Emma Beck had 20 kills and 10 digs, Avia Miller had four kills, Camilla Gonzalez had 22 digs and Ellsi Miller had three aces.

Kenai then defeated Houston 26-16, 25-15 and 25-9.

Beck had 18 kills, six aces and 10 digs, while Sarah Baisden had three kills, Ellsi Miller had five kills and 15 digs, Sophie Tapley had four aces and 11 digs, and Castillo had 18 digs.

Nikiski notches weekend sweep

The host Nikiski volleyball team won Southcentral Conference matches Friday and Saturday, defeating Grace Christian then Mountain City Christian Academy.

The Bulldogs move to 11-5 in nontournament play and 5-1 in the league.

Nikiski defeated the Grizzlies 25-14, 25-11 and 25-19.

Avery Ellis had 12 assists and four aces for Nikiski, while Kailey Stynsberg had 17 digs, Alexa Iyatunguk had six kills and four aces, and Mandee Roofe had six kills and seven blocks.

The Bulldogs then topped MCCA 25-21, 25-22 and 25-10.

Iyatunguk had 10 kills and three aces, while Stynsberg had 20 digs, Evelyn Reichert had five aces, Roofe had five kills and six blocks, Maggie Grenier had 13 assists and Avery Ellis had 12 assists.

Seward wins 2 in conference

The host Seahawks defeated Houston on Friday and Redington on Saturday in Southcentral Conference play.

Seward moves to 5-3 in nontournament play and 4-3 in the league.

The Seahawks defeated the Hawks 25-22, 25-23 and 25-13. Seward then topped Redington 26-24, 25-23 and 25-15.

Seward coach Jodi Kurtz said in a text message that on both Friday and Saturday, her team was down more than five points in the first two sets and still came back to win.

The coach said her team used the mentality of taking it one point at a time in the comebacks.

Homer notches 1st 2 wins

The host Homer volleyball team defeated Mountain City Christian Academy 3-0 on Friday and Grace Christian 3-0 on Saturday in Southcentral Conference play.

The Mariners move to 2-8 in nontournament play and 2-5 in the league.

Friday, Homer coach Ian Overson said in a text message that the team played amazing on senior night, especially serving.

Auden Cress had seven aces for the Mariners, while Channing Lowney had 14 kills and Rebecca Trowbridge had 28 assists.

Saturday, Overson said winning the team’s last home contest of the season showed how much the Mariners have improved their teamwork and tenacity.

Trowbridge had 19 assists, while Addison Grimes had six aces and Goldie Hill had three blocks.

Kenai boys, girls both placed third overall in the Kachemak Conference Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

SoHi hockey won the End of the Road tournament in Homer and the wrestling team gained 20 individual wins.
