Homer hoops sweep Houston

The Homer basketball teams swept a pair of Southcentral Conference contests Thursday in Homer.

The Homer girls beat Houston 45-20, while the Mariner boys prevailed 46-30 over the Hawks.

Charles Rohr and Jordan Beachy led the Homer boys with 13 points each, while Joel Carroll chipped in 12. Beachy had 11 by halftime while Rohr did all his scoring in the first and final quarters.

The Mariners streaked out to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter and led 26-17 at the half. Homer led 31-21 at the end of the third, but outscored Houston 15-9 in the final eight minutes to seal the deal.

In the girls game, Kailee Veldstra netted 15 points to lead Homer while Anna Godfrey notched 13.

Homer’s defense held tight by outscoring Houston 9-3 in the second quarter en route to a 20-10 halftime lead. The Mariner girls led 31-16 entering the fourth quarter, where they pulled away for good, outscoring the Hawks 14-4 to get the win.

Earlier in the week, the Nikiski Bulldogs swept the Homer Mariners in a pair of Southcentral Conference contests in Homer. The Nikiski girls prevailed 44-28 over Homer Tuesday night, while the Nikiski boys won 56-35.

Bethany Carstens scored 14 points to lead Nikiski before fouling out, while Emma Wik notched 11 and Angela Druesedow hit three 3-pointers en route to nine points. Alissa Cole had nine for Homer.

The Bulldogs grabbed a 23-15 halftime lead, then held Homer to just four points in the third quarter to set themselves up for the win.

In the boys game, Ian Johnson pumped in 16 points to lead the Nikiski boys, while Jace Kornstad and Noah Litke both pumped in 11 and Cody Handley had nine.
