Rain and wintry mix expected through midweek

Warmer temperatures and a chance of rain are expected this week through Wednesday, according to a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service on Monday.

The statement, issued for the Western Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley, includes Kenai, Soldotna, Homer and Cooper Landing.

Snow was expected to fall in the areas described on Monday, shifting to wintry mix and rain Tuesday. Rain, or mixed rain and snow, is possible for Wednesday as a second front moves over the area. The statement said forecasters aren’t sure exactly what precipitation will be experienced Wednesday, as temperatures are expected to hang around 30 degrees, and any shift could change the precipitation entirely.

Freezing rain or snow covered roadways will lead to hazardous driving conditions, the statement said. The service specifically cautioned of ponding water on roadways.

“Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions,” the statement said.
