Kris Overlander, 29, of Soldotna was sentenced by Kenai Superior Court Judge Jason Gist on Monday to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to a consolidated count of second-degree sexual abuse of a minor.

According to a Nov. 24 press release from the Alaska Department of Law, Overlander was sentenced to serve 40 years with 15 years suspended. Following his release from custody, he will be on felony probation for 20 years and will be required to register as a sex offender.

The investigation, which was led by Soldotna Police Department Officer Morgan Lyons, found that Overlander had “engaged in repeated acts of sexual penetration of a 12-year-old family member” over six months in 2024. He was charged in April of this year.

Although the presumptive sentencing range for second-degree sexual abuse of a minor is 5-15 years, Overlander’s conduct met the elements of first-degree sexual abuse, resulting in the imposition of a “significantly aggravated” sentence. According to the release, as part of his plea deal, Overlander was required to admit to multiple aggravating factors, including that the victim was “particularly vulnerable,” there was an age difference of more than 10 years between Overlander and the victim, and Overlander’s actions were the “most serious” conduct for this type of offense.

“The swift resolution of the case and the significant sentence imposed are a direct result of the strength of the investigation and the victim’s bravery in providing a detailed disclosure of the abuse,” the press release states.
