Work by ENSTAR Natural Gas Company caused a smell near Kenai Spur Highway and Main Street Loop in Kenai on Tuesday, the energy company wrote in a Facebook post.

The smell, ENSTAR wrote, is mercaptan, which it said is added to natural gas that allows the gas to be detected in the event of a leak or release. The company said the mercaptan that could be smelled Tuesday was not because of a gas leak, but rather a result of the ongoing work on the odorant.

That work, the company wrote, is expected to conclude by the end of the week. ENSTAR encouraged people who suspect a natural gas leak to call the company’s emergency dispatch at 1-844-763-5542.
