Thursday volleyball: Kenai, Nikiski, SoHi move to respective conference semis

Kenai Central, Nikiski and Soldotna made it through the first day of their conference tournaments undefeated Thursday.

The Kardinals and Bulldogs played at the Class 3A Southcentral Conference tournament at Nikiski.

In the first round, the Kards, the No. 1 seed from the South, defeated Houston, the No. 4 seed from the North, 25-12, 25-14, 25-10.

Sophie Tapley had 13 kills for Kenai, while Stella Selanoff had seven. Kate Wisnewski had 34 assists.

Brynnen Hansen had 20 digs while Selanoff had 11 and Wisnewski had 10. Ellsi Miller had three blocks and three aces.

Nikiski, the No. 2 seed from the South, defeated Redington, No. 3 from the North, 25-21, 25-19 and 25-14.

Ashlynne Playle had eight kills, while Evelyn Reichert had five. Avery Ellis had 16 assists.

Kailey Stynsberg and Reichert each had 15 digs. Playle had four blocks, while Mandee Roofe and Blakeley Jorgensen each had three. Reichert had four aces.

Also in round one, Seward, No. 3 from the South, topped Grace Christian, No. 2 from the North, 25-22, 25-19 and 25-20.

Homer, No. 4 from the South, fell to Mountain City Christian Academy 30-28, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-12.

In the semifinals, Kenai defeated Seward 25-16, 25-12 and 25-16.

Tapley had nine kills, while Avia Miller and Selanoff each had six. Wisnewski had 29 digs.

Hansen dug up 20 balls, while Wisnewski got to 16 and Selanoff had 13. Tapley had two blocks, while Ellsi Miller, Sarah Baisden and Selanoff all had two aces.

Also in the semis, the Bulldogs topped the Lions 26-24, 25-8 and 25-23.

Stynsberg had 18 digs, while Reichert had 15. Playle put down 13 kills, while Alexa Iyatunguk had 11 and Jorgensen had nine. Ellis had 27 assists.

Milly Hornung and Playle had four aces, while Roofe had three blocks.

Kenai and Nikiski will play in the semifinals Friday, Nov. 8, at 5:15 p.m.

In the playback bracket, Homer and Redington play at 10 a.m. Friday, while Grace and Houston play at 11:45 a.m.

The Homer-Redington winner plays Seward at 1:30 p.m., while the Grace-Houston winner plays MCCA at 3:15 p.m. The winners of those two matches play at 7 p.m. Friday.

Soldotna, the No. 2 seed, defeated Palmer, the No. 3 seed, 25-23, 27-25 and 25-18 at the Northern Lights Conference tournament at Colony High School.

The Stars move to a semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday against No. 1 seed Wasilla, the defending conference and Class 4A state champion.

Sadie Lane had 17 kills for the Stars, while Cassidy Kruse had 12. Sarah Brown had 29 assists.

Veronica Crane led with 20 digs, while Morgan Simac had 15 and Kiona Dexter had 12.

Hallie Fischer had eight blocks, while Kruse had seven. Crane had two aces.
