The visiting Kenai Central baseball team lost its season opener to Kodiak 8-6 on Thursday.
The Kardinals are 0-1 in the Northern Lights Conference and 0-1 overall.
Kenai scored four times in the top of the fourth, but Kodiak answered with three in the bottom of the inning. The Kards went up 6-3 in the top of the sixth, but a five-run outburst from the Bears in the bottom of the inning decided the game.
Braden Smith and Macalen Marion got Kenai through the first 2 1-3 innings without allowing a run.
Everett Chamberlain gave up three runs — one earned — on two hits in three innings. Blake Morris then yielded five runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Daniel Steffensen went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs for the Kards, while Smith was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Brandon Blake was 2 for 4 with a run. Avery Martin added two runs for Kenai.
The Kardinals stay in Kodiak for a 10 a.m. game on Friday, April 18.

The visiting Mariners improved to 4-1 overall.
Weston Marley and Clyde Clemens held down the Huskies on the mound.
Marley went the first five innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out five.
Clemens finished up by allowing a run on a hit in two innings, walking one and whiffing one.
The Mariners won with just one hit. CJ Burns had the base knock, also scoring a run. Preston Stanislaw added a run for Homer, while Marley had an RBI.
Homer will play North Pole at Wasilla on Friday, April 18, at 12:30 p.m.
