South sweeps Twins

The American Legion Twins fell to 1-2 in the league and 2-4 overall after getting swept by South on Saturday in Anchorage. South is now 4-0 in the league and 6-1 overall.

South won the first game of the day, and the league game, 8-2. South led 2-0 after the first inning, but the Twins cut it to 2-1 in the top of the second inning. South stretched the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but the Twins cut it to 3-2 in the top of the sixth before South stretched the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Riley Johnson got the start for the Twins and went 5 2-3 innings, giving up seven runs — six earned — on four hits while striking out two and walking three. Atticus Gibson picked up the last out for the Twins, giving up a run and a hit.

Harrison Metz led the Twins two-hit attack by going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Levi Mickelson and Nick Wehrstein scored the runs for the Twins, while Sammy Berry, Gibson, Mickelson and Wehrstein had the other hits.

The Twins lost the nonleague game 8-3, again outhitting South — this time 4 to 3 — in a loss. The Twins were hurt by eight errors, leading to six of the eight runs being unearned.

The Twins scored in the top of the first inning and led until South went up 4-1 in the third. The Twins cut the gap to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but South went up 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on another run in the sixth.

Berry started with two scoreless innings for the Twins, then Andrew Pieh gave up four unearned runs on one hit in an inning of work. Jace Appelhans gave up two runs in 1 2-3 innings, while Colby Sturman gave up two unearned runs in 1 1-3 innings.

Metz had a triple in two trips to the plate for the Twins, scoring a run. Berry had a hit and an RBI, while Jacob Belger had a hit, Pieh scored a run, Sturman scored a run, Dodge Petrosius had a hit and Wehrstein had an RBI.

The Twins travel to Palmer for a 12:30 p.m. league game and 3 p.m. nonleague game Sunday.
