SoHi wins, Kenai loses at Ice Challenge

The Soldotna hockey team won, and Kenai Central lost, Friday at the second day of the Peninsula Ice Challenge.

At the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex, the Stars notched an 11-0 victory over Tri-Valley. At the Kenai Multi-Purpose Facility, the Kardinals took an 8-1 loss to Houston, the defending Division II champion.

The tournament wraps up today at the sports complex. Houston can win the title by defeating Tri-Valley at 1:15 p.m. Kenai and Soldotna play at 4:15 p.m.

Soldotna 11, Tri-Valley 0

The Stars got a nine-shot shutout from Tanner Clyde in cruising past the Viking Warriors.

Daniel Heath had a hat trick for the Stars, while Jace Appelhans had two goals. Mykah Booth, Boone Theiler, Aiden Burcham, Gehret Medcoff, Silas Larsen and Blake Bucho added tallies.

Elijah Graham stopped 46 for the Viking Warriors.

Houston 8, Soldotna 1

After a scoreless first period, the Hawks exploded for five goals in the second period. Toby Petty, assisted by Avery Martin and Logan Mese, made it 5-1 in the third, but the Hawks closed it out with three more goals.

Daniel Matveev, Andrey Reutov and Trenton Huber had a pair of goals for the Hawks, while Anfim Konev and Brayden Spain added tallies.

Ari Burnside made 16 saves for the Hawks, while Seanna Swanson stopped 42 for the Kardinals.
