Running to the finish

The Homer Spit Run on Saturday drew nearly 250 participants.

Conditions were practically perfect Saturday morning for the annual Homer Spit Run, organized by the Kachemak Bay Running Club. Nearly 250 runners and walkers participated in the event between the Cosmic Hamlet Half Marathon and the 10K to the Bay, making this Spit Run one of the largest in recent years. KBRC also debuted a free 1-mile youth run this year for kid runners and their family members, which treasurer Matthew Smith said was “a really great event.”

At the 10K starting line at Homer High School, attitudes were generally relaxed and positive. Alex Whitworth, 83, from Sydney, Australia, and local resident Megan Hahn said their goal was to finish the course. Hahn said that Saturday marked her fourth race she’s participated in; this year’s event was Whitworth’s third.

Tasha Talvi, visiting from the Valley, said that she’s completed some 5Ks in the last couple of months, but the 10K to the Bay was the first 10K she’s ever run. Her goal Saturday was to “not walk.”

Michael Shearer, vacationing in Homer from Indiana with his family, was the first runner to cross the finish line at one hour, 30 minutes and 29.56 seconds, earning him first place in the men’s category and overall for the Cosmic Hamlet half marathon. He won a medal and a pair of running shoes.

Shearer said that he doesn’t compete in races often, but that he has participated in several before. The rest of his family ran in the 10K race.

“It’s like 90 degrees in Indiana right now, so this is a nice change,” he said of the clear skies and pleasant temperatures on Saturday.

Meg Gravley placed first in the women’s category for the half marathon. This year marked her second Spit Run, and she said she was “really happy” with her race, having beat her two-hour time from last year by nearly 20 minutes.

Homer High School alum Seamus McDonough took first overall in the 10K race, crossing the finish line at just under 34 minutes. He was closely followed by fellow alum Lance Seneff, coming in at 35 minutes and 50 seconds. Both run competitively for their respective colleges and said they “felt proud” of their results on Saturday.

Local resident Amanda Cherok, who’s participated in the Spit Run for the past 10 years, earned first place in the women’s category for the 10K, crossing the finish line at just over 42 minutes.

The Homer Spit Run also benefits local youth running programs, with 75% of the proceeds from both the 10K to the Bay and the Cosmic Hamlet Half Marathon going to KBRC’s youth fund. The fund provides a major grant annually to the Homer High School track program and also disburses minor grants to running programs at local elementary and middle schools. Smith said Saturday that between the two races, the fund received approximately $5,000.
