The Mat-Su Miners defeated the Peninsula Oilers 12-3 on Thursday in Alaska Baseball League play at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

By taking the second game of the five-game series, the Miners improve to 17-10 and return to a two-game lead over the Oilers (15-12) atop the Alaska Baseball League.

Mat-Su took control of the game immediately. Oilers starter and loser Bryan Woo gave up four runs in the first inning without recording an out, as the Miners rolled up three hits and three walks against him.

Tre Brown came on and slowed down the Miners, pitching four innings and giving up a run on four hits while striking out three and walking none.

But the Oilers could not make any headway against Miners starter and winner Jonathan Guardado, who went six innings and gave up two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two. Noah Cordova pitched two innings for the Miners and gave up a run on a hit, while Kyle King pitched a scoreless ninth.

For the Oilers, Justin Jaime gave up two runs in two innings before Erickson Fish yielded a run in two innings.

Field player Tyler Duke then gave up four runs while recording one out, and fellow field player Grant Wood came on to get the last two outs.

The bright spot for the Oilers was Ryan Novis going 2 for 4 to extend his hit streak to 10 games. Also recording hits for the Oilers were Calvin Farris, Zack Zalesky, John Mackay, Bryce Begell and Bronson Ballholm.

Kona Quiggle had three hits for Mat-Su.

The series continues with 7 p.m. games tonight and Saturday at Seymour Park.
