Citing a lack of snow and forecasted rainfall, StarLight StarBright, the annual winter solstice skiing fundraiser, has been canceled.
The event, a wintertime fundraiser for the Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, was previously delayed from the winter solstice — Dec. 21 — to Tuesday, Jan. 21.
An email from organizer Johna Beech on Friday says that the subpar trail conditions that caused the previous delay have not improved.
“After numerous conversations with the City of Kenai Parks & Rec Department, who maintain the trails, we have agreed for the safety of our participants and overall health of the trails to cancel the event due to the lack of snow and projected rain this weekend,” Beech wrote. “Thank you for supporting the Solstice Ski event and although we plan as well as we can, Mother Nature has the final say.”
The event is generally held each year at the Kenai Golf Course, where the trail follows a pathway brightened by luminaria and many of the skiiers come with lights of their own.
