Over $1,000 in donations made to Kenai Animal Shelter

The money will be used to respond to equipment needs and technology improvements.

More than $1,000 in public and anonymous donations were made to the Kenai Animal Shelter and will be used to respond to equipment needs and technology improvements. That’s according to legislation that would accept the donations and which will be considered by the Kenai City Council during their April 21 meeting.

A memo sent from Kenai Police Chief David Ross to the council identifies 10 individual donors and three anonymous donors. Among the donors are Peninsula Radiation Oncology, Shannon Richards, Robert and Karen Honda and Angela Vermillion.

“The Animal Control Chief has identified improvements to be made at the shelter with these funds that will improve the care of animals,” Ross wrote. “Those improvements being pursued will allow for digital display of animals in the lobby of the shelter and the ability to share that digital display at other city facilities.”

In March alone, the shelter took in 64 animals, including 25 dogs and 39 cats. That’s according to the shelter’s March 2021 monthly report prepared by Animal Control Chief JJ Hendrickson. The shelter has already taken in 166 animals in 2021. The shelter took in 178 animals in 2019 and 275 in 2020.

The Kenai Animal Shelter is currently open by appointment from Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
