More than five years after his December 2019 arrest on charges of sexual assault and assault, Travis Amos George of Kenai pleaded guilty last week and will be sentenced to 33 years in prison.
The change of plea came on Thursday, April 23, the first day of trial for George, now 42. He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault — different from the first-degree original charge — as well as to third-degree assault.
George was arrested Dec. 4, 2019, after a person reported several injuries at a local hospital, a charging document says. He was previously convicted of assault charges in 2014, 2015 and 2017. His trial was first scheduled for February 2020 and then was delayed more than 30 times to April of this year.
Per a press release from the Department of Law, George “admitted to engaging in multiple acts of sexual assault and physical assault.” He’ll receive 30 years “active” imprisonment for the sexual assault charge, and three for the assault charge. After the 33 years are completed, he’ll face 25 years of probation and be required to register as a sex offender.
A sentencing hearing is set for Aug. 27 at 3:30 p.m.
“This agreement provides closure and certainty to the victim and her family of the long-running case,” the release reads.
