Borough awards Homer schools improvements contracts

Funding for improvements to the Homer High School entrance comes out of the 2022 bond package.

Multiple contract authorizations for improvements to several Homer area schools were brought before the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly at their last regular meeting on May 6. Four of the projects are funded by the borough as regular maintenance projects while the fifth — a project to demolish and reconstruct Homer High School entrance walkways, parking and landscaping — will be completed using funds from the $65 million school improvement bond package approved by voters in 2022.

The Peninsula Clarion previously reported in September that several projects, including improvements to the Homer High School entrance, were or were soon to be designed and ready to be released, but that the borough was waiting to move forward until this spring due to a perceived shortage of contractors.

The Homer High School entrance project contract, approved by Borough Mayor Peter Micciche on April 24, was awarded to Homer company Steiner’s North Star Construction for $1.6 million. The timeline to complete the project is currently set from June 1 to Aug. 1.

Two contracts were awarded for improvements at McNeil Canyon Elementary School — one to Gregoire Construction of Homer for replacing 8,400 square feet of asphalt concrete paving, and one to Anchorage’s Boehmer Services for crack sealing, seal coating and striping of the McNeil Canyon Elementary parking lot.

The final two contracts were awarded to Gregoire Construction for replacing 5,300 square feet of pavement, as well as parking lot crack sealing, seal coating and striping, at West Homer Elementary School.
