A Kenai man has been sentenced to 50 years for sexual abuse of a minor.
Bobby Alexie, 50, was sentenced in Alaska Superior Court by Judge Lance Joanis on Monday (Sept. 29) for a total consecutive sentence of 97.5 years, with 47 years suspended and 50.5 years to serve, according to a news release from the Alaska Department of Law.
A jury found Alexie guilty of three counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree and six accounts of sexual abuse of a minor in second degree in April, following a five-day jury trial.
During Monday’s sentencing, Joanis noted that the “offenses were made more egregious due to one of the victim’s particular vulnerability and Alexie’s position of trust and authority in relation to both victims,” the release says.
Alexie’s victims were his two nieces. The girls were both under the age of 10 at the time of the sexual abuse.
According to a release after Alexie was found guilty, the abuse came to light after the youngest victim’s older sister disclosed to her mother that she saw her uncle with her younger sister late at night “behaving in a way that made her uncomfortable.”
The younger sister told her mother of the abuse after being asked. She later testified at trial that Alexie had sexually abused her.
The older sister, who first brought the abuse of her younger sister to light, ultimately testified at trial to being sexually abused herself by her uncle.
The release adds that Joanis “specifically emphasized in his sentencing remarks that Alexie had been described as the two young girls’ ‘favorite’ uncle and that he had abused the trust of his family.”
Alexie, during the trial and at sentencing, “repeatedly claimed that he was the real victim of these offenses and shifted all responsibility for his conduct to his young nieces and his consumption of alcohol.”
Deputy District Attorney Julie Matucheski said Alexie made multiple statements admitting to the abuse he was convicted of in recorded conversations during the investigation.
The release says that due to Alexie’s statements and “his guarded prospects for rehabilitation,” the sentence requested by the state and imposed by the court “placed significant emphasis on the need for community condemnation, isolation, and restoration of the victims and community.”
